Early Childhood Screening - September 21, 2026ECFE ClassesWelcome to Early Childhood Screening! For some of you this is not a new experience, for others this will be your first child to be screened. Early Childhood Screening: What is it? Many people hear about this and have questions. Here are some facts to help clarify screening’s purpose. It is a free state-wide program. Every school district provides screening for the children within their district. In place since 1977, this contributes to Minnesota’s tradition of academic excellence. State law requires that all children be screened before entering kindergarten. At screening children between the ages of 3-5 will be screened in basic health and developmental areas including: hearing, vision, coordination, speech, cognitive development, along with social and emotional development. The purpose is to identify any factors that may interfere with a child’s learning, growth, and development. It is just a screening tool, not a diagnostic tool. This is also not a test to get into preschool or to place a child in a certain kindergarten class. If there are any areas of concern, professional staff will help direct you to the next step. Children are screened by age. Parents are encouraged to have their child screened before they turn 4 because if there are any concerns we can begin early interventions which can make the difference for a child being “ready for school”. The purpose of Early Childhood Screening is to assist parents and communities, to improve the educational readiness and health of all young children in Minnesota through the early detection of children’s health, development and other factors that may interfere with a child’s learning, growth and development. (M.S.121A.19) Goals Detect and seek solutions to conditions interfering with young children’s growth, development and learning Increase parent’s awareness of physical health, development and learning readiness connections. Improve access to and encourage the regular use of preventative health services. Link families to a wide array of community services and programs. Target PopulationAll Minnesota Children between the ages of 3 ½ to 4 years of age. Screening Components – Required Sensory Screening (vision and hearing) This is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam. Growth (height and weight measurement) Developmental (cognitive, social/emotional, fine/gross motor/speech/language Immunization Review Identification of risk factors that may influence learning. Summary Interview with parents.ECFE 2026-2027 -
